What is glycerin ? The
word glycerin can be traced back to the Greek diction “glykys”, which means
sweet. Glycerin is a sweet-tasting, colorless, odorless, non-toxic, viscous
liquid with varied properties. Until 1880s, the process of recovering glycerin
from soap making was yet to be discovered and commercially produced glycerin
mostly came from the candle-producing industry. It was only in the year 1889
that a viable method of separating glycerin from soap was discovered. One of
the many properties of glycerin is its ability to pull moisture from the air
which makes it a great humectant. Despite this unique property, did you know
that commercial manufacturers of soap remove the glycerin from the bars even
though it is a natural by-product of the soap-making process? Wonder why? They
reserve it instead for the manufacture of more expensive products. So, the
soaps that you find in your nearby store are nothing but synthetic detergent.
For all those who raised their eyebrows at this revelation, fret not as we have
listed few glycerin soap recipes, especially for you. Make your own glycerin
soap with your preferred color and fragrance and keep your skin supple and
moisturized.
